Quick back look

The ancestors of the modern Shih Tzu may have originated from Tibet as early as 600 AD, and are believed to be one of the oldest dog breeds in the world today.

Although mostly thought to have originated in China, some breed journals indicate that two breeding Shih Tzu dogs were given as gifts to the Chinese imperial courts from the Tibetan Dalai Lamas as recent as the late 1800’s. It has often been presumed that Shih Tzu were bred by crossing the Lhasa Apso and Pekinese dog breeds, but there are others who adamantly disagree. However, once you have looked upon a Lhasa Apso, you will undoubtedly see the resemblance between the two breeds and how difficult it is to discern the difference without closer examination. While the truth of their origin is still uncertain, what is generally accepted is that the Tibetan holy dogs are the ancestors of today’s Shih Tzu.

Lion-like dogs like Shih Tzu (pronounced in the West “sheed-zoo” or “sheet-su”; the Chinese say “sher-zer”)existed in China for many centuries. In fact, the Chinese characters for “Shih Tzu” means lion. Weighing between 9 to 16 pounds, and standing between 8 and 11 inches, are surprisingly solid for dogs their size. The coat, which comes in many colors, is worth the time you will put into it—few dogs are as beautiful as a well-groomed Shih Tzu.

Being cute is a way of life for this lively charmer. The Shih Tzu is known to be especially affectionate with children. As a small dog bred to spend most of their day inside royal palaces, they make a great pet if you live in an apartment or lack a big backyard. Some dogs live to dig holes and chase cats, but a Shih Tzu’s idea of fun is sitting in your lap acting adorable as you try to watch TV.Shih Tzu puppies for sale

Regardless of where they first came from, they became favorites of the Chinese royal family toward the end of the 17th century. Those royals refused to part with these dogs under any circumstances, which often frustrated their Western trade partners.

They wouldn’t make their way out of China until 1930, when the first pair landed in England. It’s a good thing, too, as they went extinct in the country after the Communist revolution.Shih tzu puppies for sale

After World War II, many American service members traveled home with Shih Tzus in tow, which helped popularize them in the United States. They certainly caught on like wildfire after the 1950s, as they’re now one of the most commonly-owned dogs in America.

“Hi, just wanted to let you know that Piko is doing so good here. She got to hang out with me and my wife for about an hour before bedtime, and then she went to sleep in her new crate with no problems. Not a single peep out of her all night. She was then greeted by the boys at 6:00 a.m. This morning, and loved them instantly!.”

“Thank you so much for my lovely puppy 🙂 She is so fluffy, energetic and so much beautiful! We call her Annie. She is only the second day with us and already became a family honey! She loves running in the garden with our second dog Jerry. Jerry is quite jealous of her, but I think they will become best of friends in a few days 🙂.”

“We adopted our Nina, in December March 2019. Besides being absolutely gorgeous, she is the love of our lives. My husband and I have not had luck with our past two dogs due to aggressive behaviors, and Nina has just wiped out all our worries. Others actually bring their dogs to us for socialization. She is disposition and love of life is just beyond words..”
